Choose one central piece that portrays either the theme you are interested in or just generally your personality. This does not have to be a new purchase. Check out local resale shops, garage sales, and ads online to find a vintage piece that you might be able to put a bit of work into to become special to you!
If the focal point of your room is a furniture piece, decide the best way to make it special. You could add a coat of paint to it if you like that look or you could strip the wood and refinish its natural glow with some stain and sealer. Either way, it will bring out something special. Sometimes you may have a large piece you are working with, such as an entertainment center. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box. Remove or add doors to it. Add shelving to repurpose one or two of the holes into bookshelves. Create a space that is tailored to your needs.
Another possibility is that you may have a piece of artwork that hangs on the wall or is ready for display. Don’t be afraid to change up how it is displayed. Place a special item on a new shelf. Create a canvas print with a special photograph. Use photos from a special trip to create a unique piece for your wall. Print it out and frame it. Consider even adding a series of prints!
Putting a little time into an item that is special to you is the right place to channel your energy. These touches will make the room yours and one that brings joy when you spend time there. If you need some inspiration, browse photos online and dream a bit, or ask someone who knows you to help out. You will not regret the time spent in this area of your remodel.
